Nurses migration and registration
Nurse migration to Ireland
Working as a nurse in Ireland means getting your qualification recognised by the NMBI, completing any adaptation or aptitude step, and securing a job offer and employment permit. We help you plan each part.
Ireland recruits internationally qualified nurses, but there is no single application. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) decides whether your qualification is recognised. Your recognition decision may ask you to complete a clinical adaptation programme or an aptitude test before you can register. An Irish employer and an employment permit come into it too.
We help you understand the order: English first, then the NMBI application and documents, then the job offer, permit and travel. Every decision is made by the NMBI, Irish immigration and the employment permit authorities, so we always point you to the official pages for the current rules.

Frequently asked questions
What English score does the NMBI ask for?
The NMBI accepts IELTS Academic and OET and publishes minimum scores for each. At the time of writing these were an overall 7.0 in IELTS (6.5 allowed in writing) or OET grade B in three parts and C+ in writing, with results less than two years old. Always confirm the current scores on the NMBI website.
Will I have to take an adaptation programme or aptitude test?
That depends on your NMBI decision. Some nurses are asked to complete a clinical adaptation programme or the RCSI aptitude test in Ireland before they can register.
Do I need a job offer?
Yes, to work in Ireland you need an offer from an Irish employer and the right employment permit. Nurses have been on Ireland's critical skills list, but check the current rules and salary thresholds on the official employment permits pages.
